M1 Motorway Toll Plaza, Administration and Operations Building

The design of the M1 Toll Plaza project was to create a dynamic contemporary building complex with a presence that provided a modern symbol for Ireland's future tolled roads. The concept was to create a sense of place for the facility's transient users, striving to rise above the utilitarian nature of the transactions which take place and to create a memorable interaction.
The design references the prehistoric past of the region, as approaching the complex monolithic limestone filled gabion walls rise from the landscape, increasing in scale with proximity to the plaza. Atkins' multidiscipline team incuded Architecture, Building Structures, M&E, Landscape Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Highways, Health & Safety and Site Supervision services.
