- Design of the highway works, plus preliminary and detailed design of four road overbridges, three road underbridges and a pedestrian footbridge, as well as numerous culverts and retaining walls. We developed an architectural theme for the road bridges to ensure consistent detailing and appearance. As a contrast to this theme, we designed the pedestrian footbridge as a cable stayed structure, spanning 54 metres across the main carriageway and adjacent side road, forming a landmark feature at the southern end of the new road.
We completed the detailed design and the preparation of tender documents in a period of just four months. To achieve this fasttrack programme, we supplemented our existing design teams in Cork with additional staff from our UK offices. In addition to core highway and bridge design work, we prepared an extensive landscaping scheme with particular emphasis on ecological mitigation measures, including habitat creation, mammal passes and wildlife fencing. We were also responsible for designing road lighting for the main intersections along the route.
