Project: Cork Area Strategic Plan 2001 - 2020

Client: Cork City Council and Cork County Council

Development of a framework and process for the full integration of land use, transportation & economic strategies in the Greater Cork Area over a 20 year period which would enable Cork to become a leading European City region - globally competitive, socially inclusive and culturally enriched.

Atkins Role:

The Cork Area Strategic Plan, was commissioned by Cork Corporation and Cork Council, and provides a framework and process for the full integration of land use, transportation, social, economic and environmental strategies for the Cork Area for the next 20 years.

The Plan is underpinned by six key concepts:

  • The revitalisation of Cork City
  • The creation of Metropolitan Cork
  • Reinforcement of the Rural Towns and Villages
  • Infrastructure Led Development
  • Creation of an Integrated Transport System
  • Protection and Maintenance of the Environment
The Plan provides for a forecast population growth of 78,000 to 423,000 over the next 20 years. This increase in population, together with gradually falling family sizes will lead to an increased demand for an additional 56,000 new homes throughout the Study Area. Employment opportunities will also increase substantially, with 46,000 new jobs created by 2020. To serve the increased population, the cost of investment in transport and infrastructure services will total nearly £1.6 billion.
