Atkins was appointed by Fingal County Council in 2008 to provide advice and design support services in relation to the alignment of the Metro West light rail system through the Fingal area as proposed by the Rail Procurement Agency .

This work includes a review of project documentation, horizontal and vertical design proposals for the emerging preferred route, maintenance depot sites, station locations and park and ride sites. It also includes a review of system integration with other transport modes, interaction with existing road junctions and the general effectiveness of Metro as a transport system. The work also includes site walkovers, the preparation of alternative proposals and the review of urban design considerations at Blanchardstown Town Centre and other locations along the route.
