Water Projects : Water Supply
| Project Name |
- Greenane Group Water Supply Scheme Upgrade
|
| Client |
- Atkins was appointed by Limerick City Council in August 2006 to prepare the detailed design and contract documents for the upgrade of the Greenane Group water supply scheme comprising of c. 13 km of 100mm diameter uPVC watermain.
|
| Background & Objectives |
- The Greenane Group water supply scheme was a rural scheme serving c.120 connections, located approximately 10 km southeast of Limerick City. The scheme was supplied from 2 groundwater wells. The water from both sources was treated beside the main borehole by chlorination and pumped via 2 separate rising mains to a service reservoir of a c.45m3 capacity, located on Greenane hill. Treated water was then distributed to the group scheme via a network of HDPE mains of various sizes up to 75 mm, located in both public roads and private property.
- The upgrade was required in order to alleviate the current issues related to the water supply capacity and quality of the Group scheme supply. In particular, the users of Greenane Group water supply scheme had reported poor pressure on several occasions during periods of high demand.
|
| Scope |
- Identification of pipe capacity requirements through a detailed hydraulic analysis of the system
- Design of pipeline arrangements at bridge crossings where the minimum cover above the watermain could not be achieved
- Detailing works for hydrants, air valves and scour valves in accordance with best practices
- Identification of all connections for the 100 water users of the scheme
- Selection of pipe material with consideration to local constraints and cost
- Provision of a temporary watermain to provide continuous water supply to affected properties
- Construction of temporary earthwork embankments to allow access to sections of the site
|
| Additional Works |
- Atkins also prepared a well decommissionning report for Limerick County Council, highlighting recommendations for the decommissionning of 2 boreholes. Following a detailed analysis of the geology of the aquifers and a site survey of the above-ground installations, 2 options were identified, of which one defined the procedure to convert the wells into monitoring points for the EPA.
- The project involved the design of a new 100 mm, uPVC watermain, approximately 13 km metres long with a working pressure up to 6 bars.
