Water Projects : Hydrology

Project Name
  • Kilnalgery River Flood Study
Client
  • Cork County Council
Project Development
  • In April 2005 Cork County Council requested Atkins to carry out a Flood Study (Report RK2309-700DG01) of the Kilnaglery River which discharges to the Owenboy River at Carrigaline Co. Cork. In February 2007 Atkins was requested to carry out a further hydraulic assessment of the Kilnaglery River and its tributaries.
Scope
  • To undertake a catchment assessment of the Kilnaglery river and tributaries to determine the peak flow/levels for up to a 100-year flood event including climate change. Also to generate predictive flood hazard map for the region for a number of extreme flood events
  • To estimate the greenfield runoff from the adjacent 40ha of land
  • To assess and report on the impact of diverting the surface water run-off from the 40ha future development through a proposed surface water trunk main. This also included an assessment of the capacity of the surface water trunk main
  • To carry out and report on the capacity of the proposed Foul Trunk Sewer, which will service future development of the 40ha of zoned land within the catchment of the Kilnaglery River
  • To calculate the projected future flow, as there will be an increase in urban area within the catchment basin
  • Under the further hydraulic assessment;
    • An assessment to determine the hydraulic impact of re-aligning the Kilnaglery river and its connection with the Kilnaglery east river
    • An assessment on the proposed culvert under the entrance road to the Kerry Group facility and submission of the section 50 application required to the OPW, along with a supporting hydrological assessment
Project Data
  • For the Catchment Analysis estimation methods included:
    • The 3 term Catchment Characteristics Method as detailed in the Institute of Hydrology Report No.124 which is based on the Flood Studies Report 1975 was used as the catchment area is an ungauged catchment less than 25km2.
    • For comparison purposes, the Unit Hydrograph Method as outlined in the Flood Studies Report 1975 and amended in Flood Study Supplementary Report No.16.
    • The projected future flow was determined using the estimation method contained in the Institue of Hydrology Report No. 124 for Partial Urban Greenfield Catchments and Flood Study Supplementary Report Urbanised Method in FSSR No. 5.
  • Under the further hydraulic assessment:
    • As the proposed culvert is located in an inter-tidal area therefore it was necessary to carry out a joint probability analysis.
