  • Hydrological assessment at the proposed Coolnamuck Science and Technology Park development located on the southern banks of the River Suir at Coolnamuck approximately 2.3 km west of the town of Carrick-on-Suir. Project Development
Scope
  • The main purpose of the study is to assess the likely impact of the proposed development on the hydrological flow regime of the River Suir including an estimation of the 1 in 100 year design flood levels at the development site. The following works were carried out as part of the study:
    • Estimating the 1 in 2, 5, 50, and 1 in 100 year return period flows;
    • Predicting the return period tides in the River Suir;
    • Using HEC-RAS to model the section of the River Suir pertaining to the site in order to estimate flood levels at the development site;
    • To give recommendations for the soffit level of the proposed bridge; and
    • To give recommendations for the final floor level for proposed development.
Project Data
  • For the Catchment Analysis estimation methods included:
    • The 3 term Catchment Characteristics Method as detailed in the Institute of Hydrology Report No.124 which is based on the Flood Studies Report 1975 was used as the catchment area is an ungauged catchment less than 25km2.
    • For comparison purposes, the Unit Hydrograph Method as outlined in the Flood Studies Report 1975 and amended in Flood Study Supplementary Report No.16. 
    • The projected future flow was determined using the estimation method contained in the Institue of Hydrology Report No. 124 for Partial Urban Greenfield Catchments and Flood Study Supplementary Report Urbanised Method in FSSR No. 5.
  • Under the further hydraulic assessment:
    • As the proposed culvert is located in an inter-tidal area therefore it was necessary to carry out a joint probability analysis.
