| Project Development |
- Crookhaven village is located at the south-western extremity of the Mizen Peninsula approximately 5 miles from Mizen Head. The village has a permanent population of approximately 40 persons, but this swells to over 2,000 in the summer months. The village is extremely popular tourist destination, particularly for sailing as it is considered to be one of the safest natural harbours in the south west.
- The village has three pier structures and a slipway. Of these, McCarthy’s Quay is the largest and the most used, and is the most suitable for larger yachts and commercial vessels. However, the entire village suffers from a lack of facilities including parking which results in severe congestion during the summer months. This gave rise to health and safety problems, as well as access difficulties for both commercial and leisure users.
|
| Scope |
- Extensive consultation with both the general public and other stakeholders was undertaken which highlighted all the issues relevant to the project. Current and anticipated usage of the pier was established along with the assessment of hydrological, geotechnical and structural issues. Liaison with statutory bodies with regard to planning issues and foreshore licence application was also undertaken.
- Atkins initially produced a masterplan for the development of the entire harbour, including improvements to traffic management and the provision of car and dinghy parking areas. The masterplan was specifically designed to allow for phased development of the village in accordance with the availability of resources.

| Project Data |
- Atkins prepared a preliminary design for a 65m extension to McCarthy’s Quay accompanied by an environmental scoping report to identify and propose mitigation measures for any environmental impacts. Planning permission was granted by Cork County Council based on this design, and an application has been made for a foreshore licence. Atkins further designed, procured and supervised a marine site investigation to gain information on sediment and bedrock in the proposed extension area.
- It is expected that the works will commence in Autumn 2008 and are due to be complete in late Spring 2009.
