Project Development
- A programme of consultation, liaison, study & investigation before the issue of a preliminary report on improvements to Middle Pier, Long Island, Co. Cork. Atkins was retained for detailed design and construction supervision of the works, which were completed in summer 2000. This pier was in need of extensive repair to allow it to serve the island community into the next century. In addition, at low tide there was insufficient water around the quay to allow even the local boats to berth.

Scope
- This project involved the repair and underpinning of the existing masonry pier at Middle Pier, Long Island. A 20m length of the pier was widened by 1 metre, and the deck will be raised by 300mm. The quay was extended by a further 30m out into the existing channel to provide adequate depths of water for local vessels at all stages of the tide. The quay extension comprised tied steel sheetpile construction with a granular infill and a concrete deck and facing. Additional steps, ladders, rails, lighting, taps and bollards and other fixtures were also provided.
- The scheme included for the dredging of 4,000m3 of drift and rock from the harbour area. A 60m long rock armour breakwater was designed to protect the harbour area from north-easterly storms. However, the breakwater was not constructed due to budgetary constraints.

Project Data
- The pier required the following remedial works:
- Repointing of masonry joints and repair of diagonal cracks
- Grouting of the core with a 1:3 cement : sand grout
- Removal of unsuitable material and underpinning of the quay wall in mass concrete - prior to any dredging operations
-
The pier had to be kept open to the general public during the works.
