Water Projects : Treatment Plants
| Project Name |
- Dinish Island Waste Water Treatment Works
|
| Client |
- Department of the Marine & Natural Resources
|
| Project Development |
- To prepare a preliminary report for a wastewater treatment plant to treat effluent from fish processing plants on Dinish Island which is situated adjacent to Castletownbere on the Beara Peninsula and is the second largest fishing port in Ireland. The suggested location of the treatment plant is Loughtown.
|
| Scope |
- Conduct a detailed effluent characterisation study. Using hydro-dynamic modelling.
- Investigate the potential for co-treatment of the fish processing wastewater with the municipal sewage effluent from Castletownbere.
- Carry out a review of sludge treatment and disposal options
- Prepare site layout drawings and detailed capital and operational cost estimates
- Prepare a report on methods of procurement and implementation of the polluter pays principle in recovery of costs
|
| Recommendations |
- Fine screening followed by a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) treatment plant is most suitable for treatment of the fish processing wastewater
- Secondary biological treatment followed by disinfection is recommended for the treatment of municipal wastewater
- Provide a thermophillic in-vessel composting system to compost both DAF sludge and municipal waste activated sludge
- There are no significant process benefits to co-treatment, however location of both plants at the same site results in shared capital and operational costs.
