Water Projects : Treatment Plants
| Project Name |
- Anaerobic Digesters at Clonmel Sewerage Works
|
| Client |
- Client's Representative for Clonmel Corporation
|
| Project Development |
- An anaerobic sludge digestion plant was provided at Clonmel Sewage Treatment Works. The digesters are constructed from concrete, and are the largest anaerobic digesters treating sewage sludge in Ireland at present. The digestion plant incorporates:
- Sludge thickening and blending
- Anaerobic digestion at 35degree celsius
- Gas storage and treatment
- Methane boilers and CHP units to achieve maximum efficiency
- Digested sludge treatment and disposal
|
| Scope |
- Preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment Report and the tender documents
- Supervision of the procurement process and award of the contract
- Supervision of the construction and commissioning of the plant
- Preparation of a final account report
|
| Recommendations |
- Awarded contract to EMIT (an Italian company) due to its tender submission resultig in a saving of approximately 18% on the design/ build contract
- Project is beneficial and should proceed because the modular design of the plant allows for simple expansion of the system. In addition, the gas produced is used in gas engines to produce heat for the treatment process and also to generate electricity which is used on site.Constructed from concrete, these are the largest anaerobic digesters treating sewage sludge in Ireland at present. The Digestion Plant incorporates:
- Sludge thickening and blending
- Anaerobic digestion at 35 degrees celsius
- Gas storage and treatment
- Methane boilers and CHP units to achieve maximum efficiency
- Digested sludge treatment and disposal
- The two digesters are capable of treating a total of 4.3 tonnes/day of primary, intermediate and secondary sludge. The plant provides approximately 40% solids reduction resulting in reduced sludge disposal costs.
