Water Projects : Drainage Area Planning

Project Name
  • Peel Common Catchment Drainage Area Plan
Client
  • Southern Water (UK)
Project Development

Peel Common and its environs count 225,000 people and cover an area of approximately 8,849ha located in Hampshire in the south east of England. For the purpose of this DAP, the existing model received had to be de-simplified in the areas of known problems using asset data and surveys and recent AMP4 schemes. Future residential and commercial developments were added to generate the verified current and future models used to resolve the hydraulic deficiencies of the sewers.

Scope
  • Identify areas of flooding (schemes) in the catchment based on historical record, previous studies, discussions with operatives, and predictions of the model
  • Prioritise the schemes based on a complex scoring system based on the type of nuisance, the frequency of occurrence and the persistency since the first reported flooding incident
  • For each agreed scheme based the prioritisation scoring, use the verified CS InfoWorks model to understand the mechanism of flooding and develop cost effective options to resolve it. Recommended and preferred options range from sewer upsize to provision of online/ offline tank and  from    review of sludge treatment and disposal options
  • Prepare costings, carry out site visits and undertake aerial maps desktop studies to recommend the most cost effective option
  • Prepare risk assessments for each options
Outputs
  • Prepare position statement and output briefs for each schemes.
  • Prepare hydraulic assessments of critical properties (DG5s)
  • Prepare deliverables to be included into the final live southern water area asset plan, which will allow the end users to get a permanently updated snapshot of the sewer system and its hydraulic deficiencies
Project Data
  • Thirteen schemes were developed. Of these the largest ones included:
  • Scheme 1: upsize 325 m of 300mm, 375mm & 750 mm diameter sewer and construct 144 m of new 600 mm diameter sewer, provision of 2900 m3 of online storage, construct 150 l/s pumping station and construct 40m of new 400 mm diameter rising main.
  • Scheme 2: upsize 930 m of 525mm, 600mm & 825mm diameter sewer, provide 3600 m3 of offline storage, construct new 170 l/s pumping station and construct 20m of new 450 mm diameter rising main.
