Tonbridge and its environs count 41,000 people and cover an area of approximately 1972ha located in Kent in the south east of England. A verified CS InfoWorks model was audited by Atkins. This model is a Type III model, as per the Wallingford classification, and it comprise of more than 3155 manholes, 143,000 kms of pipes. The model was verified with 2 short term flow surveys, using the New UK volume routine and the Ground Water Infiltration module to simulate the slow response of the catchment. The model was assessed fit for the purpose of this DAP. 

Scope
  • Identify areas of flooding (schemes) in the catchment based on historical record, previous studies, discussions with operatives, and predictions of the model
  • Prioritise the schemes based on a complex scoring system based on the type of nuisance, the frequency of occurrence and the persistency since the first reported flooding incident
  • For each agreed schemes based the prioritisation scoring, use the verified CS InfoWorks model to understand the mechanism of flooding and develop cost effective options to resolve it. Recommended and preferred options range from sewer upsize to provision of online/ offline tank and  from    review of sludge treatment and disposal options
  • Prepare costing, carry out site visits and undertake aerial maps desktop studies to recommend the most cost effective option
  • Prepare risk assessments for each option
Outputs
  • Prepare position statement and output briefs for each schemes.
  • Prepare hydraulic assessments of critical properties (DG5s)            
  • Prepare deliverables to be included into the final Live Southern Water Area Asset Plan, which will allow the end users to get a permanently updated snapshot of the sewer system and its hydraulic deficiencies
Project Data
  • Scheme 1: Recommend the upsize of 630 m of 225mm, 300mm & 375mm diameter sewer and the provision of 820 m3 of online storage with associated hydrobrake. 
  • Scheme 2:Upsize of 1265 m of 225mm, 300mm, 375mm & 450mm diameter sewer, the provision of 1700 m3 offline storage and the upgrade of the pumping station to 50 l/s to pass forward Formula A.
